Assoc Professor Richard O’ Sullivan

MRI Radiologist

When magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was first introduced to Victoria 25 years ago, Richard O’Sullivan was a driving force behind the innovative new technology.

He was recently appointed Associate Professor at Monash University, with research interests in several areas of MR imaging including musculoskeletal imaging, brain trauma and the use of MRI in the early diagnosis of prostate cancer.

A/Prof O’Sullivan’s interest in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) started at medical school. Then in its infancy, MRI was at the frontier of modern medicine. After starting his post graduate training in Melbourne, A/Prof O’Sullivan completed extensive post fellowship training at the Hammersmith Hospital in London, UK, followed by a neuroradiology fellowship in Vancouver Canada, and an MRI fellowship in Los Angeles.

In 1991, A/Prof O’Sullivan was part of a group of 11 radiologists behind the opening Victoria’s first private MRI centre (and the second one in Australia) in Richmond.

A/Prof O’Sullivan has been the Director of MRI at The Bridge Road site, bringing his extensive technical and business experience to the ever-changing field of medical imaging.
